Wheel Care
Chrome:
The best way to take care of your wheels without damaging their protective finish is by frequently washing them with a mild soap and water solution. On chrome wheels a coat of wax will help protect your wheels and make them easier to clean; periodic waxing will protect the wheel's finish from the elements. Never use abrasive cleansers, steel wool pads or polishing compounds.
Polish:
To brighten up your polished wheels (no clear-coat) use a polishing compound or steel wood pads; this requires some real work but after finished they should look great. Apply some wax to keep the weather out.
On polished clear-coat wheels skip this process and uses mild soap and water solution. Never allow your wheels and tires to be steam-cleaned. Hot steam can dull the clear-coat finish on your wheels.
Painted:
Most painted alloy wheels today feature a clear-coat finish. The best way to take care of wheels without damaging their protective finish is by frequently washing them with a mild soap and water solution. Beware of automatic car washes. Some washes use acid cleaners either before or during the wash to remove dirt and grime. Other use stiff brushes for cleaning wheels and tires. Both of these processes could harm your wheel's finish. Hot steam can dull the paint and clear-coat finish on your wheels.
Note:
Don't clean hot wheels; wait until they cool. Water dries much faster at higher temperatures. Thus, cleaning wheels while they are hot may cause your mild soap solution to dry too quickly leaving spots or a film of soap on your wheels.
Warning:
Brake dust, salt, road grease and tar are all highly corrosive; wheels must be maintained!
